Time: 60 minutes
Kelley Kletti, Shelly Mleziva, Heidi Spies
Objective:
- Students will experience their classmates’ heritage by taste testing each family’s traditional dish.
Standard:
- CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.7 Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
Content Area:
- Families
Materials:
- tables
- forks
- plates
- napkins
- cups
Procedure:
- Each child needs to have a representative adult (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, neighbor, family friend).
- Each child needs to decide a dish to bring into class that represents their family’s heritage.
- Along with each dish, the child needs to have a map of the country, a picture of the possible country’s flag, and how and why the dish is important to their family’s tradition.
- The dish should also be labeled with what it is and ingredients (for those children with allergies.)
Assessment
- Systematic Observation
- Student had the required pieces
- representative
- dish
- map
- flag (if from another country)
- dish name tag
- ingredients
- description of importance of the dish
- Student was open to trying new foods
Differentiation:
- Students don’t need to try foods they are allergic to.
- If a representative cannot attend, the student can just participate as long as the requirements are met.
- Students can attempt a dish from their heritage if they don’t particularly have dishes from their heritage in their family tradition.
